The three principal aerial gateways to the region are Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA/MQP), Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport (HDS), and Skukuza Airport (SZK) in the Kruger National Park. KMIA hosts several regional routes, including daily flights to major hubs like Johannesburg and Cape Town. There are also scheduled shuttles to private game lodges and flights to Vilancoulos and Livingstone. Skukuza offers daily scheduled flights to and from Johannesburg and Cape Town, with shuttles to nearby game lodges. Additionally, Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit provides daily flights to and from Johannesburg and Cape Town, ensuring convenient access for all visitors.

The region offers excellent road access from all directions. The N4 highway traverses the region from east to west, linking Nelspruit/Mbombela with Johannesburg, Pretoria/Tshwane, and Maputo via the Lebombo border post. SANRAL roads are well maintained, providing easy access from Phalaborwa, Tzaneen, Polokwane, and Zimbabwe in the north. Access from the west is available via Lydenburg/Mashishing, Dullstroom, and Machadodorp/eNtokozweni. From the south, you can travel from Ermelo, Piet Retief/Mkhondo, and Swaziland. Driving conditions are generally outstanding, allowing for a smooth trip across the Kruger Lowveld. Ensure you plan your route in advance for the most efficient travel.

Getting Around

Getting Around

Many visitors choose a self-drive option to explore the region thoroughly. Major car hire companies have depots in Nelspruit/Mbombela and Hazyview, as well as at KMIA (White River), Skukuza Airport (Kruger National Park), and Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit). If you choose to drive, remember that distances between towns are significant, making careful planning vital. While public transport is somewhat limited, the minibus taxi network and buses work well for local travel. Long-distance coaches and minibus transfers are also available from Johannesburg, Pretoria/Tshwane, and Maputo, providing reliable alternatives for those who prefer not to drive themselves throughout the region.
